G20 Social

During the Brazilian presidency, the G20 will have a special motto: “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.”

One of the hallmarks of the Brazilian federal government under the administration of President Lula is that civil society is heard in the processes of creating public policies. This decision is the same for the international agenda.

The G20 Social was announced by President Lula at the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, when Brazil symbolically assumed the presidency of the group.
The objective of G20 Social is to increase the participation of non-governmental actors in G20 activities and decision-making processes.

Speech by Minister Márcio Macêdo during the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development:

"We are opening this space so that civil society from all over the world can be heard and participate in the G20 discussions. The idea is for civil society to present a document to President Lula and we are negotiating for it to also be presented at the Summit of Heads of State. This document will bring the vision of the people, of civil society, of those who are affected by the policies that are decided in the G20 environment, but who historically have never participated in this decision.”

Engagement Groups

As part of a plural and diverse country, with the authority to address fundamental issues such as climate change and the fight against hunger and poverty, the G20 Social will guarantee space for the voices, struggles and demands of populations and non-governmental actors from member countries that They are the largest economies in the world.

This is how internal national policies are being handled — and how the Brazilian G20 presidency wants to strengthen discussions on the many topics addressed by the G20 engagement groups. They must reflect the global character of the common challenges experienced by our populations.

G20 Social Summit

The highlight of the G20 Social will be the Social Summit, between November 14th and 16th, 2024, on the eve of the G20 Leaders' Summit, both in Rio de Janeiro. The Social Summit will be the stage that will showcase the work developed over almost a year by societies, a rich panorama of the exchange of experiences between non-governmental agents that will certainly show new paths for the construction of policies that reflect values such as social justice , economic and environmental and the fight to reduce all types of inequality.
