Y20 Pre-Summit

The Y20 Pre-Summit took place between June 17th and 19th, 2024

In 2024, the Y20 Pre-Summit was held in Belém, Pará, between June 17th and 19th, at Hangar – Centro de Convenções e Feiras da Amazônia. The choice of Belém highlighted the inclusion of the Amazon region in debates on climate change, sustainability and economic development. During the event, crucial negotiations took place for the next steps of Y20, with discussions covering topics such as combating hunger, poverty and inequality; climate change, energy transition and sustainable development; reform of the global governance system; inclusion and diversity; and innovation and future of work.

The Pre-Summit

In addition to the debates, there was an integration of international delegates with Brazilian youth, who will represent their countries at Y20, as well as cultural visits to Theatro da Paz and Ilha do Combú, enriching participants' understanding of local culture and issues. The choice of Belém as the venue for this meeting emphasizes the inclusion of the Amazon region in the global debate on issues such as climate change, sustainability and economic development. When taking place in the Amazon, the involvement of local culture stands out, the importance of this place for the issues of sustainability and the environment discussed, and the recognition of the geopolitical relevance of the Amazon forest.

The methodology applied in the Pre-Summit proved to be effective in documenting and analyzing delegates' contributions. The meetings took place in a hybrid format, with speeches duly documented and transcribed, resulting in a raw document that served as a basis for analysis and systematization. After reviewing and coding the information, a consensus and disagreement document was created, capturing areas of agreement and disagreement among delegates, which facilitated future discussions and negotiations.

During the Pre-Summit, each delegation presented their proposals in a hybrid format, ensuring everyone's participation. Key formulations included the need to promote food security policies, robust social policies, education and training, health and well-being, sustainable development, gender empowerment, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, promotion of renewable energy, inclusion of vulnerable populations, international cooperation, environmental preservation, global governance reform, promoting diversity and inclusion, protecting the rights of indigenous communities, mental health and reproductive rights, combating gender-based violence, digitalization, regulation of artificial intelligence, sustainable technologies, and global partnerships.

The Y20 Pre-Summit in Belém was a crucial event that provided rich discussions on urgent global issues. These essential changes require the active inclusion of youth in decision-making, thus ensuring their contribution to building a more sustainable and equitable future.
